Dead End Follies 2017 Longform Archive
Last 2017 retrospective post, I promise.
If 2017 taught me something, it's that you clearly don't care about some books I read or movies I see, but you'll care for almost anything I can explore unpack in finer details. And I'm grateful that you find me interesting enough to stick around. Last year, I set the goal for myself to write one longform piece a month, which I achieved by writing thirteen overall. So, in case it's a slow day at work or you're home wondering what to do with yourself, here are all the longform pieces I wrote in 2017, which cover a wide variety of pop culture topics from Taylor Swift to internet memes.
The Understanding Series
Last year, I started a new series of essay where I just shared a personal pop culture obsession of mine without context or anything. In these, I explained why these topics fascinated me, tried to make you see things through my eyes and - hopefully - kickstart discussion.
Here are the nine pieces in order.
Understanding the Misappreciated Art of Podcasting
Understanding True Detective, Season One
Understanding True Detective, Season Two
Other Longform Pieces
The Most Important Song in the World
Art Criticism in the internet age *
Your Novel Blows Because...it's Cartoonishly Bleak
* Maybe my favorite thing I wrote all year.
